On Thursday the 28th of May 2026, I was browsing the website page for Shoprite looking to purchase a Typek A4 paper and I found the page advertising that the paper is available at the nearest store to our offices in Carlton Centre Johannesburg for R61.99 but for customers with Extra Savings card, the price would be R59.99. Due to the fact that we usually buy some of our urgent office supplies from that shop, I quickly stepped out of the office with my Extra savings card to go and buy the printing paper on promo. To my unpleasant surprise, when I got to the till; the Typek paper was way above the advertised price and it was selling for around R81. I advised the teller that on their website, the product was advertised to be selling for R59.99 for Extra savings cardholders and I showed her the advert on the website. The teller called one of her female supervisors to attend to the situation but when she arrived, she informed me that the issue needed someone else and she called another male supervisors whom I believe he is her superior. When the male supervisor arrived, I informed her of the false advertising which was seemingly taking place and I further advised her that as a customer, I chose to come to Shoprite to buy that paper as a result of their online promotion but he flatly refused to sell the printing paper to me at that advertised price. Without any further discussions, except to inform him that I was going to escalate the issue with their head office, I left the store. On the very day of the incident, I called Shoprite customer care line and lodged a Query with Leigh Anne the call centre assistant and she allocated me reference number: *** and thereafter, she informed me that she was going to direct the Query to the relevant person. After lodging the Query, no one called me to clarify the issue until I called the Shoprite customer care line again on Tuesday the 02nd of June 2026 to follow up on the Query and a lady by the name Paige advised me that she was going to escalate the issue and on the very day, a gentleman by the name Thomas contacted me and informed me that he was the Regional Manager and that he wanted to understand the queried issue from me prior to him contacting the store manager of the relevant store to hear his version of the issue before he reverts with a solution. Till date, I have not heard from the Regional Manager again. After my call with the Regional Manager on the aforementioned Tuesday, almost 29 minutes later, I received a telephone call from a lady by the name Mpho, who informed me that she was calling from Shoprite Carlton Centre and that she wanted to also understand what had transpired. I briefly advised her of what had taken place and I also informed her to seek further information of what had transpired from her male colleague who had previously engaged me on the issue when I was at the store. At the end of our call, Mpho informed me that she was going to consult with her male colleague and revert. It is almost 9 days since I queried this false advertising and since then, I have spoken to 5 people about my query on regarding their false advert and till date, all of them have failed to come up with a solution regarding this issue. It is blatantly being ignored and one wonders how the Shoprite Group is managing to exponentially grow with such extreme poor levels of customer customer care. This issue further demonstrates how poorly customers are being treated by these Shoprite stores regardless of those customers being the bloodstream of their business. The level of customer service that I have experienced through out this ordeal is truly pathetic. It is extremely disappointing that the Shoprite Group is unable to train or maintain the same level of customer service as that which Checkers stores offer but they all belong to the same group. This begs the question as to whether it views Checkers customers as more worthy and deserving of proper customer service compared to Shoprite customers. This also raises the question of differentiation in treatment of of customers. I am highly disappointed with Shoprite Group.
