I visited Shoprite Bara Mall yesterday to purchase a few groceries, and unfortunately, what should have been a normal shopping experience turned into an extremely unpleasant one because of the way I was treated at the till. I purchased a combo containing rice, flour and maize meal. When I picked up the flour to place it at the till, the packaging unexpectedly tore open, causing the flour to spill all over me. I immediately tried to clean myself up. Instead of receiving assistance or even basic courtesy from the cashier, Bagezile Buthelezi, I was spoken to in a very rude and dismissive manner. She told me not to “dare” put the opened flour on her space and that I should put it somewhere else. Another cashier working nearby actually apologised and explained that I could place the opened flour on the floor and collect another one on my way out. I appreciated that assistance, as it was a much more professional response to an accident that was not intentional. While I was still trying to clean the flour off myself, Ms Buthelezi continued rushing me and repeatedly told me to “give her a code”. I was confused because I did not understand what she was referring to. A customer standing behind me had to explain that she was asking for the barcode. I thanked the customer and proceeded to give Ms Buthelezi the barcode. She then rudely told me that the code was wrong. I repeated it, only for her to say, “Say a proper code.” I gave it to her again, after which she eventually asked a colleague who assists with packing to help with the barcode. The situation continued when I was asked whether I needed a plastic bag. I clearly said no. I was asked again and again said no. The colleague who had been assisting then went to another till because I did not require assistance with packing and did not want a plastic bag. Despite me saying no multiple times, Ms Buthelezi proceeded to ring up a plastic bag. I initially assumed that perhaps she had not heard me, so before making payment, I specifically told her again that I did not need a plastic bag. She proceeded with the transaction, asked me to pay, and I paid. I took my groceries and left the unwanted plastic bag behind. It was only when I reached the exit that the customer who had been standing behind me informed me that the plastic bag had in fact been charged to my transaction and that the cashier had not informed me that I had been charged for something I had repeatedly declined. I thanked her and went to my car to put my groceries away before returning to the store. I then asked to speak to the manager, Gift, and explained the entire incident to him. To his credit, he listened to my complaint and told me that he would deal with the matter. He also advised me that I was welcome to return and ask for feedback. I am posting this review because the issue was not simply that one interaction was unpleasant. It was the overall manner in which I was treated throughout the transaction, particularly when I was already dealing with the embarrassment and inconvenience of having flour spill all over me. Customers should not have to feel intimidated, rushed or spoken down to when they are trying to complete a purchase. If a customer says “no” to an additional item such as a plastic bag, that should also be respected, and the customer should certainly not discover afterwards that they were charged for something they had explicitly declined. I am not looking for an argument with the employee. I am asking Shoprite management to take this complaint seriously, investigate what happened, review the transaction and, where possible, the relevant till/CCTV records, and provide me with meaningful feedback on how this matter has been handled. I would appreciate accountability and an assurance that other customers will not have to experience the same treatment. I redeemed a shoprite voucher of an amount r140. So when I went to my money market voucher says that the voucher account is frozen. I called 4 times in the morning they said they dont see anything wrong. The account is active someone guided me to get to an option to get a token number. I get to bree shoprite I tried to pay the token is not working. The money market lady told me that she can use the store phone I must call using my phone I did that the guy I spoke with couldn't assist me. I asked to speak to a manager he refused said he will call me back he didn't. I called for the 6 time somelady told me that I must wait she is getting her supervisor on call she never did. I simply told that I want a way forward how do I reverse the voucher and what is plan b. No one was able answer. Then the shoprite staff at bree they set and watched me as if am crazy. They told me it is not there business.
