THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU JOIN
Be very careful when you join Selfmed. We have only been within them since the 1st of January 2016 and already I have received numerous emails of medical expenses that are not covered.On the 2nd of December 2015 my mother got admitted to ARWYP, we were informed it's for a low platelet count. On the 4th of December my mother was discharged, after not receiving any medical attention, nor was any medicine prescribed to her on discharge. We were informed that everything is normal, not to worry.On the 29th of December 2015 we went through the same trauma, again no treatment, no explanation, only after reporting ARWYP they performed some tests, again we were informed everything is normal, no problems. (The results came back after the 1st of January 2016).On the 6th of January 2016 my Mother went to the GP for a check up and he informed her that he wants her to go consult a specialist so that the reason for the fluctuation in platelet count can be determined. Selfmed informed us that this consultation will not be paid for, nor will any treatment for this condition be paid for as it was not disclosed to them. How can we if we don't know? Not before the 11th of February?<br>
All medical aids have strict protocols regarding the declaration of previous medical conditions on application. The forms provided to applicants clearly requests that medical information for the prior 12 months be disclosed and if any changes occur from the date of application to the date of inception, the Scheme must be updated accordingly. The request for information includes if any advice or treatment has been provided during the above mentioned period and therefore does include, in this case, the hospitalization. While we fully understand the position of the member the rule in this case protects the Scheme from persons either joining a medical aid or selecting a more comprehensive benefit plan once a medical condition(s) becomes apparent or is diagnosed. While we are certainly not accusing the member of wrongdoing the rule has to be app**** uniformly. The matter will further be addressed with the member directly. Regards SELFMED MEDICAL SCHEME
