A little more than a year ago I wished to read something that was referred to online. On accessing the Internet address given, I was informed that the item I wished to read could only be read through Scribd. The Scribd website informed me that I could use it for free for a year, with a monthly payment thereafter, that I would be notified in advance before any payment would be withdrawn from my bank account, and that I could cancel my subscription at any time. I signed up, gave my bank details, read the item that was the reason for my signing up for Scribd, and promptly forgot all about the subscription and never used it again.
On 8 April this year my bank informed me that a payment had been made from my account to Scribd. I was astounded, as I had not received the promised notice of commencement of payments. I used the online facility on the Scribd website to complain and to request cancellation, and not hearing anything further from them I assumed that they would at least cancel my subscription as I had requested.
I heard nothing in response to my complaint, but to my amazement on 8 May I received a further notification from my bank that Scribd had withdrawn another monthly payment from my bank account. Not having any method of complaining to a human, I managed to cancel my account, and once more assumed that that was the end of the matter, and that two months’ subscription payments, although getting nothing in return, was a small price to pay for having (as I thought) got out of the clutches of this Internet ********.
Lo and behold, on 8 June 2022 my bank informed me that Scribd had withdrawn yet another monthly payment from my bank account. Having cancelled my account I found that I cou;d not log in, and without logging in I could not endeavour to obtain satisfactory self-help.
I have since written to *** repeating the above history and asking for them to acknowledge receipt and to let me know what they intend doing about it. Response? Total silence, but two further monthly payments have been withdrawn from my account.
I googled "Scribd ****" and found that my experience was not an isolated one, and that their practice of *****ing from past customers is commonplace. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
