I had a problem with my profile and I ended up owing SARS, unknowingly, a huge amount. SARS garnished me and took an amount of R8250 from my salary and were gonna continue until the debt was settled. This was dEspite the fact that I stated that I wasnt aware of the debt and that as soon as I was aware a stop payment and an objection was lodged. The amount that they were taking was too much and I was left with too little to survive each month. So I decided to borrow money from a bank after getting advice from one their consultants. I paid off the outstanding amount in December. But to my surprise end of January the garnish still went through. Now I have a loan I must pay off and SARS still took money from my salary. I was told I will not get that refund until my case was finalised. The case and their investigation continued. They requested documents and affidavits. I gave them everything they requested. Then on the 23rd of May the case was finalised and a refund of the whole R79688.01 was due to me. I have been waiting for the refund since then. On the 1st of June I called and the lady that assisted me told me that she can see that a stopper was lifted on the 23rd of May but the refund has not been processed. She said she'll escalate the matter so that they will process it. Today (14 June) I call again to find out what's happening. A rude guy told me I will bot get refund because my account was under audit and that I have laid a complaint in March. Demanded answers to why I did that. Even though I explained about the whole case. Now I'm frustrated. I'm paying off a loan and it's causing me financial distress. Why don't SARS just give me a refund so that I can carry on with my life. This is causing me so much stress. Now I have to beg for my refund. Or do I need to go to the lawyers which will also cost me or go to Tax Ombudsman? I have been patient since last year November. Please help me.
