Reassessed 3 to 4 times in a row
Why are my 60-odd-year-old retired parents being audited immediately after tax returns are submitted? Three times if not four times in a row. You call the centre, and after 20 minutes of waiting, the call gets cut out. Go on the website to chat, no alert sound to communicate the service agent has rep****. People cannot spend 13 minutes looking at a screen to see this reply from the agent. In other words, once you submit your returns, everything is in order, expect an email a month later to state you are being reassessed.

07 Nov 2023, 11:11It appears that after three attempts to get assistance on the Live Chat option on SARS, I am being ignored. What was 13 minutes is now 16 minutes and what started in the morning has now spilled over into the afternoon. No respect for people's time. Punitive threats via email in PDF documents when people "ignore" their requests because when you do try to make contact with them, this is what we get. Reading between the lines: I must just stay quiet and SARS will interpret my silence as a "no response" which then serves as the green light to go ahead with the reassessment. I think PIRLS and the University of Pretoria (and the Dept. of Education) got it wrong with the 81% statistic of the current state of reading and comprehension in a home language among 10-year-olds. The problem may run deeper than an inability to comprehend the written word.
