At first SARS accused me of not submitting returns for 2016, a year which I was unemployed. They then proceeded to say I have to make a payment of R3500 as a result. I made multiple calls and submitted proof to show that I was unemployed in that period and i ended up receiving help in the form of them cancelling the “DEBT”. Now I have always submitted my returns via the Auto Assessment option, as they informed me to manually submit or edit only if there is a dispute or alteration to what they have on their system, of which I haven’t had any. To my surprise a few months ago I am now being flooded with letters via their MobiApp, letters saying I failed to submit to the year 2024 and I now owe an amount of R3500. I again spoke to an agent over the phone who then informed me that they cannot cancel the debt as it had been previously done before for another debt, the one I was wrongfully charged for. I proceeded to make payments arrangements on the app as I was not going to be able to pay the full amount, I updated my banking details and had a debit order set up. On the arranged date I had money in my bank account however no debit order from SARS came in. I am now receiving threatening letters from SARS saying if I do not make the full payment in 10 working days, a civil judgment will be filed against me and I will have my assets attached and sold by the Sheriff of the court. This is very unfair and ridiculous because I did make the payment arrangement to have it go off via debit order.
