Apparently donations to registered charities are suspicious.
SARS treatment of donations just gets more bizarre. Last year they insisted that the charity must keep more personal detail, none of which is relevant to the charity. This merely exposes taxpayers personal data to more risk. Each charity must now keep tax number, id number, physical address. Most charities do not have the facility to keep these data secure. What is more is that the 21 day verification story is nonsense. Having submitted documentation 5th August I now get a repeat of the verification notice today (10 September), as if the documents have just been submitted.

12 Sept 2026, 19:55It gets worse. Apparently the charities lie and will issue tax certs to anyone. I have now just received a request from SARS to prove that I actually made these payments. It just keeps getting more and more bizarre and onerous. Get the feeling that SARS actively discourage donations, at least they aim to make it impossible to claim.
