Waiting 8 months for Santam response and still waiting

Last year around October 2016, while preparing my tax-documents for SARS, I found a small deduction (+-R200) on my bank-account that was link to Santam via ABSA. I am now over 60 and as you can imagine some of my monthly deductions for old policies are very small and i was thus not to concerned about that specific deduction, actually I hardly noticed it. Because it was linked on my ABSA account as an ABSA-type deduction, I was even less suspicious.

My investigation showed the following:- About 10years ago I had a candy factory in Bloemfontein, Toffees4U, with bank accounts and registered everywhere. I also created a fictitious name that I used to label some of my products, Cameleon Candy. During this time a policy was created by Santam for Cameleon Candy (the name on the bag) which was deducted from my personal account for 10 years until I stopped it recently.

The problem is that I sold the factory 9 years ago, but nobody ever contacted me regarding the maintenance of the policy! I am not unknown to Santam because my short term policy is with them and have been with them for the past possible 15 years. So, they had no excuse not to contact me. They had all my details.

All I want to know is, will Santam pay me back the money they took from me during the period when they did not service the policy? For 9 years there were no factory, so they protected WHAT??

I have been trying to get an answer from Santam since November 2016, but nothing, only promises that they will look into the matter.

This complaint is about a Santam policy nr:- ********** 3858 (which has been cancelled Nov17)

Contact person at Santam is Malanie at tel :- ********** 219

Good afternoon Gallie,

Apologies for only getting back to you now. We have been in discussions with our commercial contact centre as well as the Regional Manager regarding this matter.

You had a broker on your policy and Santam sent the renewals of the policy to them annually when in turn they need to discuss the renewals with you. Had they done that regularly they would have realised you had sold the business and that the policy should be cancelled. This broker is not in Santam's employment and functions independently and can Santam not take accountability for the actions of the broker.

The regional manager has agreed to approve a premium refund until the most recent renewal and not from 9 years back.

The refund had been processed and calculated as follow:

Refund Period : 1 April 2016 - 25 November 2016

R1593.06 (1 Apr-31 Oct) + R37.93 (26 Nov - 30 Nov) = R1631

Thank you kindly.
