Unfairly handed over to debt collectors

I was involved in a small vehicle accident in 2013, where my vehicle caught the side of another vehicle while reversing out of parking bay. The owner of the vehicle informed me that she was insured and that she would let me know if there was an excess amount I needed to pay ( I was not insured). We exchanged details. I did see her not long afterwards and she told me everything was taken care of by her insurance company and I do not have to pay in anything.<br> So the matter was forgotten until March 2015. Out of the blue on my doorstep arrives a letter from a debt collecting company hired by Santam, asking me to immediately settle an outstanding amount of R3953.50. <br> I have never once received an account from Santam. I am now expected to come up with this money on short notice and pay interest and pay for all charges incurred by the debt collecting company. I can't see how this can be legal, and it is extremely unprofessional of Santam to never once contact me by any means whatsoever and then hand me over to a debt collecting company!
