Be careful when getting home insurance with Santam. Read your policy carefully! I had a collapsed drain pipe which caused human excrement pushing back to my bath, flooding my bathroom and hallway. I had to act quickly and got it repaired (cant let my kids live like this) and then started with the claiming process. After a long battle I was rejected because the cause is not an insured peril. According to all Santam's Policies (correspondence from my broker), a collapsed drain pipe caused by landslip or subsidence (if you can proof it! how you do that underneath you tiles, who knows) is not covered!!! Why do you take out insurance? Surely for these unforeseen circumstances. Please read the wording on your policy, because when a drain is built underneath your house, they will come with wear and tear excuses (still not sure how I have control to maintain this) and what so ever not to pay the claim. Have a look at Steyn City, perfect example of where your money goes when paying insurance companies (quick to take that every month) I suggest, especially when you are a first time buyer, to carefully choose the right insurer because who can afford these unexpected costs if your livelihood is disrupted. I wish I could share all correspondence from insurer on this forum, some statements are shocking but we will leave it for another day. I will surely now start looking for a different insurer. Santam has lost all my respect, they didn't even try to come to some sort of agreement, just rejection! Nice to know this is the people I give money to every month (even through Covid and being retrenched, not missing 1 payment)
