Santam do not take responsibility for follow-up costs caused by Kayserbaird and themselfes, claim number 19865

1. I wrote my broker at Kayserbaird on the 22.11.2016, that there is probably an underground pipe burst on my property and asked for a plumber who is able to detect the underground water leak. The message was send with high importance.

2. Despite the urgency and multiple requests to my broker a plumber was sent by the insurer only 2 months later on the 22nd of January 2017.

3. On the 23.01.2017 I got the following message: Santam have confirmed that there is no claim, as the cause of damage is a blocked septic tank. The septic tank is full and requires to be emptied by means of a honey sucker

4. I paid for the emptying of the septic tank to Septic Tank Services R 1.810,00, but the water meter still turned incessantly

8. I called Ethekwini and asked for checking and replacing the water meter. It turned out, that the water meter is working correctly. This test costs me R 1.110,00 ( R 973,68 plus VAT).

9. I booked on the 25th of January Daniel From Tapthat Plumbers who detected the underground pipe burst. According of his detailed invoice (R 7.227,60): We found that the water was not showing on the surface as it was running into a nearby gully. This causing the issues with the septic tank as there was a constant flow of fresh water running into the septic tank causing it to overflow.

This amount less excess was paid by Santam on the 10.03.2017.

10. On the 26. March I´ve sent the last Ethekwini Bill to Kayserbird. The water loss for the last 3 month is an amount to R 8.899,16!!!

11. On the 27th of March I got the following message from Kayserbraird: We have received feedback from Santam, and they have noted that you pay a water loss levy to the municipality every month. The correct procedure would be to claim through the municipality first, and then Santam will be able to assist with the shortfall, if any.

The above follow-up costs are caused clearly by Kayserbaird and Santam and not by the insured! I claim all together R 11.809,16. for water loss, the unneccessary emptying of the septic tank and for checking of the water meter. These costs are developed due delays in my claim and an unproffessional plumber sent by Santam.

To forward me regarding the water-loss to a third party insurance, further not to react to my claim regarding the costs for the emptying of the septic tank and checking of the water meter is therefore unjustified.

I will report the case to the Ombudsman for Short Term Insurance.
