No joy with service

We have tried to get our broker taken off the contract as he has left the company that he worked for. We have been given 4 different ways of doing so, the first one involved cancelling our insurance - which we managed to correct. NOW we apparantly HAVE TO HAVE a broker and are not allowed to deal direct, because I have had claims in the last 3 years. I am not sure what the difference is whether a broker reports the claims or whether i do - all in all the service has been very muddled and going nowhere. Everyone has been pleasant enough, but no actual assistance, so all very frustrating.
