Disappointed by Lack of Transparency and Forced Broker Dependency - Santam Insurance

I've been a Santam policyholder for some time now, and I feel compelled to share my recent experiences, which might caution potential and existing customers. My journey with Santam took a turn when I discovered, during a claim process in December 2024, that my policy did not cover certain fundamental aspects like water loss from burst geysers, underground leaks and geyser maintenance. This was particularly surprising and frustrating because such details were not disclosed when I signed up or during the quotation stage.

Why was it not made clear from the outset that these essential covers were excluded? I only found out about these exclusions when I needed to make a claim, which seems quite unfair and misleading. These are not minor details but fundamental aspects of coverage that significantly affect the utility and value of the insurance I pay for.

Additionally, the process to amend or inquire about additional coverage options has been equally disheartening. I've been informed that certain covers are only available if I go through a broker. This requirement feels like an unnecessary hurdle since I am already paying directly for the service. Why should I be compelled to engage a broker and possibly incur additional costs or complications?

My attempts to resolve these issues and gain clear answers have been met with repeated suggestions to review the call recordings or to switch to a broker-mediated policy, neither of which addresses the core issue of initial transparency and direct customer service.

I am now requesting a comprehensive list of all exclusions, which I understand are available in the broker policy, in a clear and easy-to-read table format. This request is to ensure that I can have absolute clarity on what I am covered for without needing to interpret ambiguous policy wording.

Santam has always been a reputable provider, but my recent experiences have left me questioning if their policies are indeed customer-centric as advertised. Potential and existing customers deserve transparency, especially when it pertains to the fundamental protections of their insurance coverage.
