UNILATERAL TERMINATION OF FUNERAL POLICY COVER BY SANLAM REPLACEMENT OF “SENIOR FOR SENIORS’’ POLICY NO ***3: M V JOOSTE:
Dear Sir/Madame
UNILATERAL TERMINATION OF FUNERAL POLICY COVER BY SANLAM REPLACEMENT OF “SENIOR FOR SENIORS’’ POLICY NO ***3: M V JOOSTE: ID *** I hereby wish to bring under your attention and for further investigation, the unilateral decision made by Sanlam to discontinue the funeral cover of my mother-in-law, after I maintained the policy for more than 21 years. During 2003 I took out a funeral cover policy with Channel Life at an initial monthly premium of just over R50 pm. Channel Life was later taken over by Sanlam and up until 30 June 2024, I was paying a premium of just over R72 pm under policy number ***3, known as “Senior for Seniors” policy. The principle life assured under this policy is Ms M V Jooste, (ID *** 089) who is my mother-in-law and I am the premium payer ( Fredrick S Petersen: ID *** 087). I noticed on my banking statement that no premiums were deducted in respect of Ms Jooste’s policy, as well as another policy, where I am the principle life insured. Kindly note that I have decided not to further pursue the matter as far as my policy is concerned and this communiqué is intended to focus on the matter of Ms Jooste, only. (The premiums on my replacement policy would increase from R36 pm to R330 pm and as a pensioner, I cannot afford it) Upon further investigation into the matter, I was informed that Sanlam has decided to terminate the products that I have subscribed to and that new policy agreements should be concluded. I confirm that my residential address, email address as well as my contact number have been at the disposal of Sanlam under policy number ***3, however I never received a notification that the said policy would be discontinued. The first time I realized that something was wrong, was when the debit orders for the end of July 2024 were not collected. I also called the Sanlam Call Centre on 23 August 2024 to retrieve proof of such notification, however the excuse offered, was that emails / SMS go out in bulk and such proof would not be possible to be provided. (Spoke to Diandré) Of note would be that I took out the policy of my mother-in-law in 2003 and at an average of R50 pm, the capital contributions over the 21 year period is in excess of R12,600, which exceeded the cover of R10,000. I feel that the unilateral decision by Sanlam to discontinue the products that I have subscribed to over so many years is very unfair and could result in undue financial hardship, as the new cover for Ms Jooste will now increase from R72 pm, to R190 pm. Despite this huge increase in policy premium, I submitted a new application to Sanlam on 26 August 2024 and I requested for the normal waiting period, applicable to new policies, to be waived in this case. However, the new policy was not registered on their system as on 30 August 2024. My mother-in-law is 86 years old and unfortunately, the inevitable can happen at any time. I humbly request that this matter be investigated in as far as reasonability, fairness and exploitation against the backdrop of economic realities in our country are concerned, please. An early response to this request shall be highly appreciated. Yours sincerely,
Freddie Petersen.
