Sanlam ICover funeral plan misleading clients

My 78 yr old mother took this policy in 2012. Seemingly it is valid for 10 years at a premium of R45pm. When I went to pay at Checkers in February, they told me that the policy had lapsed and they gave me a number to call. I asked my mother to follow up. She told me that she was told that the policy no longer exists. Upon contacting the icover call centre on her behalf. I was told that January was the last month of cover and the policy has lapsed, since it was valid for 10 years. I asked if they had made efforts to contact my mother and advise her of this before. I was told that an sms was sent in December 2021. I'm not sure whose brilliant idea was it to send sms' to 78year olds in this day and age instead of calling and explaining. R45 over 10 years equals R5400. This is the amount she paid religiously with her SASSA grant. Now she's no longer covered and is too old for a new policy in her name. They have decided that they will not refund her. I just want to know how sanlam can take my mother's grant money and then leave her with no cover. They are not even saying that they will pay should there be a claim even though the policy period has lapsed. Icover policy number ***. Telling me or her that the policy has lapsed means nothing. All we hear is 'thanks for your donation of R5400'

I received a call from Yolanda Friday afternoon, 18 February 2022. She understood my concern but also told me that communication from the administrator stated that rewards will not be issued but she has escalated the matter. I await further communication.

This is the response received from Sanlam icover:
Good day
Please see below from the administrator .
Please note the decision has been discussed to not refund premiums for terminated policies.
This includes refunds for premiums collected after the termination date.
Client who cannot recall the T&C’s as per the policy booklet they got at the time of purchase, clearly states the policy is a 10-year term policy. See the insert below.
Feel free to pass this on to clients who question the validity of the policy term.
There are sms’ being sent to clients with a 30-day notice period of the termination date. Clients are welcome to get quotes from Sanlam Indie or alternatively, a lead can be generated (using the New leads form on Skyview) for the client to be contacted by a sales agent.
There are still ongoing solutions being sought to migrate these clients to a similar product that can accommodate their age at an affordable premium.
Any new developments in this regard will be communicated in advance.

So Sanlam is walking away with my mother's R5400 plus 10 year interest and my mom has nothing to show for it. Which part of this reponse is fair? Where does it say in the T&C's that should the policyholder not die within 10 years, Sanlam keeps the money?

The reason for this is that we would still pay if a claim has been submitted. This means that they are still covered in the event of a death claim.

Please remember to get the postal code for the area the client wants to be seen in. This way the Leads Management System ( LMS) will distribute the lead to the nearest branch for the client’s convenience. Most of the information to fulfil the lead is already on POP.

End___

I wish this had been the initial communication.

A year later, the matter has been finalized by the ombudsman in favor of Sanlam. I'm thankful that I have a funeral policy for my 79 year old mother with another insurer.
