Extremely disappointing experience with Sanlam Gap Cover

I submitted a Gap Cover claim to Sanlam on 8 July after paying a doctor R5,000 cash. My medical aid paid R1,400, leaving me with a shortfall of R3,600.

I only received feedback from Sanlam on 20 August, despite being advised that claims would be dealt with within 10 working days.

What is particularly frustrating is that my claim was rejected on the basis that “medical aid rejected the claim.” This makes no sense to me because my medical-aid statement clearly shows that R1,400 was paid towards the claim.

I then called Sanlam to try and get clarity. Unfortunately, the call-centre agent was not helpful and could not properly explain the reason for the rejection. He advised that he had submitted the matter for review and that it should be resolved within 48 hours.

More than 48 hours later, I called again, only to be told that the matter is still in progress.

At this point, I am extremely frustrated with the lack of communication, the delays and the inconsistent explanations. I have been waiting since 8 July for a proper resolution, and every time I contact Sanlam I am given another timeframe that is not met.

I am not asking for special treatment. I simply want Sanlam to properly review the claim, explain why it was rejected when my medical aid clearly paid R1,400, and provide a clear and reasonable resolution.

Sanlam, please take ownership of this matter and provide an actual answer instead of another delay.

I wrote a review on HelloPeter yesterday because I was extremely frustrated with the way our claim was being handled. To Sanlam’s credit, the matter was escalated — but unfortunately, we have now received yet another reason for declining the claim.

This is becoming incredibly frustrating.

My husband sustained a gunshot wound during a violent ******** incident, and as a consequence of that injury he developed seizures requiring ongoing treatment by a neurologist. The claim we submitted was for this neurological treatment under the Discovery Extender Benefit, with the relevant medical codes provided to demonstrate the underlying injury.

We have now been told that the claim is being declined because “Benefit Criteria Has Not Been Met for Accidental Casualty.” However, we are not claiming for a casualty visit. We are claiming for the neurological treatment resulting from the gunshot injury.

We were also previously told by a call-centre agent that Sanlam covers the incident itself, but not “whatever situations may emerge from the incident.” If that is genuinely the policy position, please show us where this limitation appears in the policy wording.

At this point, I am asking for someone who actually understands the policy and the benefit we claimed to review this matter. Please do not send us back to another condescending call-centre agent who treats this as a “take it or leave it” situation.

We pay for this insurance service. We are entitled to a proper explanation of why our claim does not meet the specific benefit criteria, not changing explanations for why it is being declined.

Please have this escalated to a suitably qualified claims/technical specialist who can review the claim, the medical evidence, the codes submitted and the actual Discovery Extender Benefit wording, and provide us with a clear, written explanation.
