Donation cause swollen and purple arm

My friend and I went to donate blood the other day. They said they couldn't use the blood cause they didn't put in the needle correctly. The following days his entire arm started to turn purple, super sensitive and swollen. We called them and they said to put some ice on it. It's been getting worse and it's been a week.
