When last have you shopped at Samsung Tygervalley? My Wife's bad experience! Her story...

I certainly won’t be shopping there anytime soon again.

A month ago, I upgraded my cellphone and bought the Samsung 7 edge. A day later, I went into Samsung to buy a suitable cover to protect my new phone. The sales guy on duty recommended the Body Glove backing with the Tempered glass protective cover. I noticed that the backing and cover was retailing for R590 each – already R90 each more than what my husband paid at another dealer for his same cover and backing. I happened to have an empty box with me from the cover my husband had bought, and showed the salesman the price tag of R499.

He agreed to charge me R500 for the cover, and R500 for the backing. He then suggested that he put them on the phone, as he does many of these each day. The phone looked great with its new cover and protective backing. However, a week later, I noticed hairline cracks developing in various places on the cover. I had not dropped the phone at any time, and always tucked it safely away between soft items in my handbag when not in use. Every passing day, a new little crack was evident. By the end of the week, my phone looked horrible. I could not live with all these little cracks on my new phone cover.

So exactly 3 weeks after purchase, I went back to Samsung with my phone in hand, and a saleslady assisted me this time. I explained my situation to her, telling her that I was most disappointed after spending R1000 on protective covering for the phone, that they put on for me, it was already unacceptably damaged and unusable. I was looking for a solution and thought she would offer some compensation as well. She offered to sell me another identical cover at R590. I responded that I wasn’t satisfied with that idea, and asked her why she thought it would be different this time, as the last one they put on was shattered already. She went away for a while, and came back saying she would offer me R100 discount if I went for the flip cover that was more durable at the initial cost of R990. So regardless that I spent R1000 last month on protective covering – I now only had to spend R890! I was still not happy – this just didn’t seem fair. So when I shook my head disgruntledly at her, she said that “You can obviously afford a phone that costs R16000, so R1000 is nothing for protective covering!” Where does the Consumer Proctection Act come in here?

I left off saying “you know what – I’ll rather look elsewhere for another alternative.” (I found a suitable alternative in another shop at Tygervalley for R299)

What has happened to customer service? Do they determine the cost of the accessories by the value of your phone, and just decide to “nail” the consumer even more because they’re spending a higher value on the original article? Shocking. I will never shop there again. There are many smaller retailers struggling to earn a living that offer excellent after sales service. I will definitely give them my support!
