Samsung won't fix screen

My dad bougt me a Samsung Galaxy S7 as a gift late last year (November 2016). I dropped my phone and it unfortunately fell face down, I went to Samsung mall of the South to ask them if I can get my phone repaired and I was told I need proof of purchase. I then called the Samsung South Africa call centre to explain that the phone was a gift and they can use my serial number or IMEI number to check when it was purchased of which they were not very helpful besides rudely telling me that for all they know I could have bought the phone earlier than what the IMEI number is showing and only started using it in November 2016 ( Why would a person do that?!!!), what good is a gift if I have to ask for a slip???! why can't Samsung cater for cellphones given as gifts??!! Now I have to go back to my dad whom at this point does not know where he placed the slip, to say my phone can't be fixed because of this.
