Replacement TV Not Equivalent to Original Purchase – Ongoing Unresolved Issue
I want to share my experience with Samsung regarding the purchase and replacement of my television, which has been nothing short of frustrating, unfair, and unresolved for over 2 months now.
In 2024, I purchased a premium Samsung 8K TV (considered flagship at the time), a top-tier model with advanced features such as anti-glare coating, superior Neo-QLED matrix panel quality with consistent blacks, local dimming, wide viewing angles, One Connect design, and premium performance. This was a significant purchase and personal investment.
Unfortunately, the TV developed factory defects, resulting in three in-warranty repairs (two LCD replacements and one mainboard replacement) just over a year after purchase. Samsung eventually acknowledged the TV had multiple issues and declared the unit unrepairable. Instead of supplying an equivalent replacement as required under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), Samsung offered me a larger screen 4K model, which is clearly inferior to my original purchase:
- While the replacement was a larger screen size, it was only a 4K panel, lacking most of the advanced functionality of my original 8K model.
- The replacement panel shows inconsistent black levels, poor viewing angles, and no anti-glare coating — all of which were present in my original TV.
- The replacement also arrived out of the box with dead pixels, confirmed in a Samsung technical report. They are now arranging to swap it for yet another unit of the same inferior model.
- Samsung’s communication has been underwhelming, to say the least. Several of my emails requesting updates went unanswered, while unilateral decisions were made without my consent.
- Instead of offering a fair solution, Samsung has repeatedly insisted on a full refund in the form of in-store credit. I have explicitly stated multiple times that I cannot accept this, as my TV was purchased at a deep discount. A refund of the original amount would leave me unable to replace the product with a model of the same tier.
- The replacement unit was accepted under protest, while reserving my right to seek further resolution through the CGSO.
- At one stage, a Samsung RGA representative even blocked delivery and issued an in-store credit for the discounted amount I paid — without informing me — despite delivery having already been confirmed via email.
- All communication and timelines have been carefully documented. This ordeal has dragged on for months with no fair resolution. I have been reasonable, patient, and willing to compromise — even accepting a 4K unit instead of an 8K — but the replacement remains an absolute downgrade in terms of quality, performance, and features.
- The Consumer Protection Act is clear: when a replacement is offered, it must be of equal value and quality. A larger screen size does not make up for the loss of significant technical features and performance.
This entire ordeal is like ordering a gourmet steak at a restaurant — aged, perfectly cooked, with all the trimmings. When the steak comes out overcooked and burnt at the edges, you send it back. Instead of giving you another proper steak, the restaurant apologises and brings you a plate of fish fingers. Then they try to convince you it’s the same thing because it’s “still food.”
I am not asking for an upgrade — simply a fair and equivalent exchange for the product I originally purchased. At the very least, Samsung should consider offering a premium 4K unit that includes the advanced features of my original 8K model. Unfortunately, they have shown an unwillingness to comply.
Having only furnished my home with high-end Samsung products, this experience has tarnished my confidence in Samsung South Africa. Going forward, I will choose other brands over Samsung.
