In the beginning of January, I booked a flight for a relative using my Voyager Miles. Booking was accepted and I received an e-Ticket. At the time I thought it odd that I had not been asked for an ID or Passport number - I contact the call centre and was assured all was in order and the traveller would need to present himself at check-in. Knowing full well that travelling to Cape Town over Easter would be challenging I booked well in advance and followed up to ensure the flight was secure.

As an SAA Voyager member, I expect certain perks for my loyalty and was perhaps nieve enough to think this was the case...

The day before the scheduled flight, I called again to ensure the flight was confirmed etc. etc. This time round I was told that as I had used the traveller's initials and not their full name they would not be allowed to travel??? Needless to say, nobody was able to assist in changing the ticket or assisting me in any way. I, in turn, purchased a cash ticket on alternative airlines - cost to date R7,200. Understanding rules exist for good reason, I would have happily obliged.

However, my booking was accepted. A ticket was issued. I confirmed this was in order and still retain the reference number of this call. What really upsets me is the level of responsibility SAA accept in this instance, the outcome or assistance being nil and that it is acceptable for an airline to bully a consumer in this way. They have retained my loyalty in the past, but to what benefit?

In issuing the ticket and confirming the flight with me surely SAA took some responsibility in the matter? Trying to deal with someone of reasonable mind was virtually impossible and incredibly frustrating.

I hope to be put in touch with someone who can assist clear this up?
