On 6 February I was scheduled to fly, with several colleagues, from OR Thambo to Port Elizabeth and then to travel on to Grahamstown. SA 1459 was delayed. Eventually we were told that the plane could not be fixed. We were informed that there was place for 50 people to fly on another plane but that 19 would need to fly the following morning. They would get free domestic return flights in thanks. No-one was particularly keen. We all had families and work to get back to. I queried the free flight and was assured that I would be able to fly for free return to Johannesburg. After thinking about it, I agreed to stay as my best friend is getting married in April. I then encouraged others to volunteer. Eventually, in a large part due to my urging, 19 people volunteered. 10 of these were from my company. This was all on the basis of a free domestic flight. We then waited for hours and hours for ten meal vouchers to be issued. <br> The next morning - long after we had helped out SA Express - they informed us that actually the flight was not entirely free and we would need to pay the tax - a significant part of the cost of a domestic flight.
