I was on a flight from CPT to JHB on 27/01/17 at 11:15. When checking in I confirmed with the SAA attendant that I could carry on 2 pieces of hand luggage economy class. One laptop bag and a SMALL RUG-SACK. Combined, certainly smaller than a small suitcase that most people carry on.

On boarding, I was told that I could only carry on 1 bag in a rude and derogatory manner by the flight attendant. I tried to explain that both bags hold valuables but was told that I should either give one bag to the ground crew or take another flight. I tried to explain my situation to the ground crew member and was told "not my problem I only check in bags". My last and third attempt to explain my situation to the flight attended was met with more aggression and I was told that the fact that I received the wrong information when checking in was not her problem and that she does not work in the same department and departments within SAA do not communicate.

My bag was checked in and the obvious happened. Valuable items disappeared from my bag. The following is also obvious, SAA will not and cannot take responsibility for valuable items disappearing from your luggage!

I am a fairly frequent flyer and in most cases I only have my laptop bag. It has happened that I buy wine or get a gift from clients or have to take gifts to clients in the past. On all other airlines I have: 1. Never been treated with such disrespect and contempt irrespective of class, economy or business and, 2. I have always been allowed an additional SMALL BAG when needed.

Again combined my 2 bags are always smaller than small suitcases that are allowed.

Luckily we have choice and other airlines do frequently fly the same routes.

Don't fly SAA, I will certainly try to avoid SAA as far as possible. Well done flight attended!
