Think very carefully before using SA Waterproofing

I contracted with SA Waterproofing to do work at my house for R170000. The contract provided for 50% to be paid on acceptance of the quote and 50% on completion of the project. I paid the 50% deposit of R85000. Shortly after the work started, and when the project was way less than 25% complete, Darrell Band, the owner of SA Waterproofing, stated they required interim payments on large projects and requested a further payment of R45000. Band refused to justify the amount and when I offered to make smaller payments at intervals to ensure he was always cash positive on the project he rejected my offer. Eventually, he gave me an ultimatum to pay R45000 within 3 days or he would abandon the project. Band then phoned me to ask if I was going to pay the R45000 and when I again tried to point out that there was no justification for payment of this amount he hung up the phone. I was not willing to pay good money after bad and refused to pay. Band then sent me an email announcing that he would not be returning to the site to complete the job leaving me to forfeit the balance of my deposit and to find another contractor to pick up the pieces. Would I recommend them? Absolutely not!

Hello Chris Sinclaire,

Hi Chris,

Chris the money owed is an issue, before we started I specifically said to you that I will ask for another payment after a certain period of the job at which we were, which we certainly agreed upon, the work we did up to date was well within what was paid. The suggestion of offering small amounts resulted in money issues and due to strict policies and past experience we couldn't carry on with service due to no guarantee that the rest of the amount would be paid.
Kind Regards,
Darrell Band
