South African Post Office needs a kick in the backside.
I recently bought a few cheap-ish items, mostly shoes, online. I don't really order stuff online on a regular basis and in this case it was a few more items than I would normally buy in a relatively short period with each item coming from a different place. I fully expected to be waiting longer than I'd like to get the items once they arrived in SA. I was able to track all of the items up to the point where they departed the country of origin and then they all, one by one, disappeared into limbo. All of the items were bought over a period between early May to the middle of June 2018 with the latest arrival date being projected as the 19th of August (which I took with a grain of salt since I knew they'd all have to go through our "super efficient" postal service). So once the last item entered limbo at JIMC, I started checking in at the local post office. Nothing. Nothing. Still nothing. Eventually I got sick of waiting for updates to the tracking information and started trying to find a contact number or email address which actually resulted in a reply from SAPO. Google provided a nice, long list of email addresses and phone numbers for SAPO Customer Service. Every single one of which resulted in no reply. Phones just rang and rang and rang into infinity and emails were ignored. "One" email address resulted in an automated response promising that someone would assist me within 48 hours. That automated response was the "only" reply I "ever" got to my emails. And "most" of my emails never even got "that". EVENTUALLY, I found a phone number which was actually "answered" when I called it. (Albeit still only after half an hour or so of listening to "your call is important to us" and variations on the same). And this number was able to provide me with exactly "one" local tracking number. Everything else was apparently still sitting in a heap at JIMC, waiting for someone to bother to scan it. As of last week I have finally received 3 of the items I ordered but upon collecting them from the post office, I was presented with a letter stating that one of my items has been detained and that I need to email proof of purchase, etc. to the email address provided on the letter. No other means of contacting them was provided on the letter and now, several days after sending them the requested information, I have not so much as received an automated acknowledgement of my email to them. The letter warns me that the item will be seized if not settled for within 60 days. But I am absolutely unable to contact these people. SAPO seems far less like a "Postal Service" and far more like a barely functioning checkpoint where some state flunkies can shop for free stuff. I'm getting seriously sick of having to chase my packages to make sure they get where they are supposed to go. And I am MASSIVELY sick of the fact that it is so hard to get any sort of communication with these people who are being trusted with our mail.
