Post Office are rogues!!!!!
I recently purchased a shirt and 2 caps from the united kingdom via online shopping.<br> The cost of my purchase in Rand value was +-R900.00 and in pounds it worked to 40 pounds excl.tax.<br> The parcel came in an overnight bag and less than 5kg's.<br> I was sent a receipt from the queensburgh postal service to pick up my parcel,<br> when at the post office i was asked to pay R590.19 incl.for my parcel.<br> When i questioned the clerk i was told it was for customs and tax on my purchase<br> ,that was for 2 shirts,cap and badges.<br> My purchase was as follows x1 shirt:25 pounds....x1 cap:6.67 pounds....x1 beanie:8.33 pounds...<br> Can someone explain to me how do you pay so much for customs on<br> items that only came to 40 pounds...I feel this is a ******* by the post office and customs,<br> I have brought numerous stuff over the years from overseas and this probably was the<br> smallest amount i brought down only to be told by the post office that i must pay -R600.00 for a parcel that cost -R900.00.<br> This is the reason why people don't use the postal service anymore...<br> I guess with no money coming in they have to rip people off.<br>

Kindly note that all goods that are imported into the country are subjected to either customs duties or VAT or even both. On top of that the Post Office charges a clearance fee of R35 on a large and R18 on a small parcel. The only goods that are exempted from such duties are gifts of which the value do not exceed R 400. If the value of the parcel exceeded the threshold of R400 the full amount will be subjected to customs duty and VAT.The post office is not responsible for assessing goods but acts as a clearance agent on behalf of SARS/CUSTOMS and fees are always payable at the post office upon collection.If you are not pleased with the fact that customs duties were charged on your consignment you are welcome to return the item to the post office and it will be forwarded to customs for re-assessment.
Alternatively you may direct you query to Customs on www.sars.gov.za.
