A General Practitioner first or an aesthetician?
I consulted a GP with an "interest in skincare and aesthetic medicine" due to a terrible sudden outbreak of acne At my first consult she looked at my skin and said that I have mask acne. I mentioned that I hardly ever go out, may be once or twice a week and that it wasn't related to my mask. She then said if it is hormonal that I could go onto the pill or use a tablet call insumax but that I should first try a salicylic peel. I agreed.
Her consult was R350. Her peel was R850. (Its literally a 2-3minute thing) and the cost of the lotion she gave me meant that my first consult cost R1650 in total. I messaged her 2 weeks later to tell her that my face was 5 times worse and she said that it usually gets worse before it gets better and to persist with the the alcohol based lotion I had purchased from her and to come in the next month for another peel. I visited my local gp the next week because I was suffering with terrible heart burn and asked him , what he thought of my skin. He said I had stage 2 acne and that I needed to take an antibiotic..the peel alone was not going to help.
I messaged the initial doctor again and mentioned this to her as well as my other symptom (hair loss) and asked if she could send me for a blood test as I had a 6th sense that something was wrong.. and then with those results we could treat the cause of my symptoms.
Her receptionist sent me a curt message saying that the doctor didn't do blood tests (I asked for her to give me the lab forms at least?) and that if I needed one and oral meds that I should go back to my local gp!
She also said that if I wanted to see results I needed to come back for atleast 4 or 5 more peels (at a cost of R850 each) and if I needed to see the doctor for anything else I would need to pay for the consult. (Which I wasnt keen on , seeing that the first one had been a waste of money)
I went to another female gp who said she was shocked as every medical student knows that if a female presents with symptoms like mine, that the first line of action was a blood test and not a peel! We subsequently found that my cholestrol and hdl levels are high and I have been put on a statin (I am high risk as my mum has had 3 heart bypasses in the last 15 years) and antibiotics for my acne. My Dr says that the high cholestrol was causing my acne , heartburn and hair loss. I'm not sure how R4000 worth of skin peels was going to correct my skin when my cholestrol levels were not regulated. I would like to know , if the GP " with an interest in skin" behaved ethically and correctly when she advised me on using her products and was not interested in finding the cause of my problems? Is being a GP secondary to being an aesthetician?
