Poor after sales support, be careful if you don't live in Johannesburg.

I bought a Ulephone Armour 22 from Rugged about a month ago. It is complex device and changing from Samsung to Ulephone was a challenge. After some help from their support and a lot of time I managed to configure the phone to a useable interface. HOWEVER! One issue remains, that could have potential life threatening implications. After simple commands, or even ending a phone call a pop up balloon appears at the bottom of the screen confirming the action. It stays there. You cannot swipe it away, tap it or in anyway move it. If you need your keyboard it sits right on top of the keyboard making typing almost impossible. The balloon stays there for some minutes. If you need to type an urgent message like " call an ambulance" or " call police" or just " help" you cannot, you must wait for the balloon to disappear. I have sent emails and screenshots, telephoned numerous times and a week after receiving a reply that the the matter "has been escalated" there is no reply. I have spoken to management who promised to come back to me, I'm still waiting. Their support insists that it is an Android issue, but after using Samsung Android for 12 years and never having this problem before I highly doubt it. That Android developers would allow the system to obscure your keyboard and pose a critical situation in communication I don't believe. Rugged support says I want my phone to be like Samsung, while I just want to see my keypad! The support response to a simple but critical issue is almost nonexistent. I am not in Johannesburg where they are, and they do not have any support in outlying areas. I cannot just go in and take the phone.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for contacting us through Hello Peter. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the "Smart Assist" issue.
We understand that resolving this required multiple video calls daily, and we appreciate your patience. To clarify, the "balloon" feature is user-activated and won't appear unless intentionally turned on.
Please follow the steps our technician provided to deactivate it. If you continue to experience issues, we're happy to assist you further.

Our support services extend beyond Johannesburg and we'd be happy to receive the device via courier if a repair is necessary, however, the device is not faulty and the "balloon" can easily be removed in your settings.

Best regards,
Rugged SA

Obviously the issue is unresolved after following all instructions from your support, sending screenshots etc he says it's "Android". Then my emails and phone calls are ignored! You just want to sweep the issue under the rug and hope it goes away!

How must I book in my device and be without a phone? I require a phone to access the property where I live for starters! Couriers and repair time will result in days at the least that I cannot access my property, IE house. Nevermind being without communication. In December 2023 I was taken by ambulance to hospital, I need access to emergency services. And, as I understand under the POPIA act you have to delete allt information and files on the phone if it is booked in for service, it took many hours and days to load my files. I won't go through that again. To fix a pop up balloon on your phone, and by default over your keypad should not require courier services and booking a phone in. It's a software issue, and is a Ulephone issue, NOT ANDROID.
