DANGEROUS MUNICIPAL INFRASTRUCTURE

My wife and I went to renew our Driver's licenses at the Roodepoort Licensing department, near Florida lake. After reporting to reception, one needs to walk down to the waiting area - there are a few steps as well as a ramp - and this is where the problem lies!! The steps are terribly slippery, there are no handrails and the ramp is no better. There are no warnings such as "beware of the steps" nor are there any makings on the stairs. My wife slipped and fell down these stairs, hurting her ankle and wrist. When she complained, initially she was met by people who laughed at her demise. She then got the name and details of the Municipal Manager, and promptly phoned him. He was initially very rude to my wife because she mispronounced his surname, but then listened to her complaint. He stated that there was money to do anything, so my wife suggested even some warning tape would already assist. He stated he had some red tape but had not done anything with it. I carried on with the licensing process, and all the municipal workers we spoke to agreed that the steps were a huge problem, and many had already fallen - some had to be collected by ambulance!! They welcomed the fact that I would take this further, and asked me to assist them! I have a good knowledge of public building requirements, and I can tell you that this is an ******* situation - this needs to be condemned or repaired. Why has the department of Labour not been to investigate, if there have been so many falls. It is despicable that our Municipality does not care about its residents, and why there is no money to upgrade or repair public buildings, or are we talking *******ion here as well? I now need to take my wife in for X-Rays and visit to the doctor, as her ankle and foot is very badly swollen - guess I will get nowhere asking the Municipality to pay for that!!
