Don’t fall into the same trap we did. A month ago, my husband and I booked two chalets at RiverView Fishing to celebrate our son’s 11th birthday with friends. The Sunday before our booked weekend, we were informed at short notice that our two sons’ Vaal Arts Festival events were scheduled for the same weekend. As RiverView Fishing is about 1.5 hours away, I asked the owner if we could move the booking. He refused, which we accepted, and we decided to make the best of it by leaving late the Friday and driving back and forth for the Saturday morning events. When we arrived, we needed a gate code to enter. Although the owner had emailed it, there was no reception at the gate to retrieve the email. There was also no speaker or way to contact anyone from the gate. No one had warned us that there would be no signal on the property, so we could not prepare for this. We eventually sent my 10-year-old son over the gate to get help. A lady assisted us and gave us the entry code, allowing us to enter and settle in. When the owner came to us, I explained that I had not known there would be no reception to access information or make calls. His response was rude, questioning how I could not remember the information from the email. The next morning at 8am, when I had to leave with my two sons for the festival, the gate code did not work. We then discovered that there was a different code for entry and exit, but no one had given us the exit code — not in person, by note, WhatsApp, email, or verbally. With no way to contact the owner, my son had to jump the gate again so we could leave on time. This could have been a serious problem in an emergency. The owner now refuses to refund our deposit because my son jumped the gate, even though this only happened because access information was not properly communicated. The only code provided by email was for entry, and we were never given the exit code. I am horrified. It is such a beautiful place, but the treatment and lack of communication were unacceptable. A rule cannot be enforced if guests are not given the information needed to follow it.
