Studying at Richfield

I am a student at Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology. When we registered, we were told that if a student misses tests or exams with valid reasons and able to provide supporting documents, they will be given an opportunity to write.

Last year while I was doing my second year (1st semester) I was diagnosed with a life threatening disease (Cushing Syndrome), it has no treatment. The only cure is through a surgery. I did notify Richfield. Fortunately, at that time I didn't miss any of my tests or exams. I did feel like pausing my studies and when I enquired, it seemed like a long process. This year I decided that I will continue and complete the 2nd year. I am currently doing semester 2.

While I was in the middle of writing my tests, I was called by the hospital to do my operation. I immediately alerted Richfield that I have to go to the hospital for the operation. They requested for supporting documents and the tests I have missed. I was discharged May 30 and had to go for review June 2nd. June 2nd, I sent Richfield an email with the doctor's letter and 2 tests I have missed. June 4th, I receive a call from Richfield after 10am saying I have to write the tests that day. I responded saying that was impossible because I was at work and I didn't have my laptop with me. There was no way I could write. Had they informed me at least the day before I would have made a plan to write. Then the administrator I spoke to said I must send an email stating that I am unable to write and he will escalate it. June 5th, I received an email stating that I cannot be given another opportunity they are busy with the exam preparations etc.

I said, if they are unable to give me an opportunity, then, they must refund me they fees for the 2 modules and I will do those modules with the other group. The group that is currently doing their second year, first semester. They will be doing their second semester in August. This will delay me but it is better than having to fail the modules and restart them again. NB: Nothing has been done on these modules. No written assignments nothing at all. They are also refusing that.

Today I called the managing director of distance learning at Richfield who I had included in my emails. When I asked her if she saw my email she said no, she was in meetings all day yesterday, she just got to her desk and she will go through the emails and she will respond. I asked if I could quickly explain my situation and tell her what I was thinking so that when she goes through the email she will at least know what I wanted. She refused and said she will go through the email and respond there. She really had no interest in what I was saying. She was so dismissive.

To me, it seems like Richfield is all about money making, they really don't care about students. They don't forget to remind us about paying our fees. Now they want me to fail the modules so I can start them again. That means I would have to re-register and pay for them again.

Is this fair?
