Never again

Worst car rental experience ever. Do not rent from them!! One hour after we picked up the car we received an email that apparently they heard us using the clutch wrong as we were driving off and that they will check it upon return and should they find it faulty, will charge us for the damage. Mind you, this is a car with over 200k kilometers on the clock and also, I had no idea what they were talking about, as I have driven manual cars, old and new, all my life. I was already then determined to return the car immediately, what with the potential cost of a new clutch looming over me - how was I even going to prove that I didn't break it should they decide to accuse me of that upon returning the car?? On top of that, the handbreak wasn't working properly, making it dangerous to drive the car on those Cape Town uphills. They tested that on a little uphill next to their office, where we actually saw the car rolling back (!!) and then straight faced told us that the car was totally fine. Not to mention that there were also all kinds of weird noises while driving the car and the steering wheel had so much resistance that it was very hard to navigate it. There was no apology (the manager on call was quite rude), and we ended up having to pay the standard cancelation fee, as their only "solution" to us was to take the very same car back again. We felt super unsafe driving this car and wouldn't have driven it anymore even if they had charged us the full amount of the rental. Also note that you are required to bring the car back clean (inside and out), so add those costs to your rental price and they actually deduct the deposit from your credit card instead of just blocking it. We didn't even have the car for a day and ended up paying almost 1000 Rand. We actually feel betrayed by them and I think most of us will agree that this is no way of doing business. AroundAboutCars saved the day for us by providing us with an alternative car that was both newer and cheaper (!!), they are cooperating with Europcar so you can be assured to get a functioning car and be treated professionally.
