Undisclosed "Settlement" Fees

I have a Game account and I settled my outstanding balance of R439.80 in February 2016. (I paid R450, slightly more than the balance). Since February I have not received any further statements from Game, which I did find strange. But as far I was concerned the account is paid up in full and that's one less retail account I need to worry about.

So imagine my surprise when on 16 May I received a letter informing me that an amount of R81.72 is outstanding on my account. Say what?? The account was paid in full - where does this R81.72 come from?

I contacted the call centre today (17 May) to enquire about this amount that has magically appeared on my account. And was told it is a "settlement fee". Again, say what?? I have to pay a settlement fee on an amount that has already been settled? My anger boiled. I have never heard of anything like this. Nor did Game or RCS inform me of any "settlement" fees. I have paid Game off before and did not come across this.

To add insult to injury. The letter I received on 16 May (dated 13 May). I called them on 17 May (the next day). Would you believe the "settlement" fee had jumped from R81.72 to around R136!! Just like that. From one day to the next they pull a number out of the air and make that your new "settlement" fee. I was livid. Not only was I not aware of this (as I had not received any statements since February!), but this is a clear rip-off. They are *****ing their customers over and think nothing of it. Since when does one need to pay an extra amount to settle your retail account?? Never come across this.

On the plus side: After demanding to speak to someone in higher authority, I was kept on hold for a long time. When the agent finally came back she said that because I wasn't aware of the fees, etc. they would be reversing the charges. THANK YOU FOR AT LEAST DOING THAT!

I am still angry about this. So you pay an account off, yet it is not paid off... Seriously? Who comes up with these BS policies and rules - all, of course, to siphon off as much money as they can out of us. As if Game and RCS don't already make a ****ing with their insane interest rates as is! What a ****** rip-off they are.

A second complaint about Game / RCS: After paying my account off in full (or so I thought), I had emailed RCS on 8 March to request they reinstate my credit limit which had been reduced during a time I fell into a small amount of arrears. No response. I followed up on 24 March. Still no response to this day and it is now 17 May. Yet the automated response says they will respond within 24 hours. Yeah right. It's been nearly 3 months! Pathetic.

I will now be closing my Game account as a result of this experience. I was given an email address for closures of accounts. I'm willing to bet I will get no response there either.

RCS and Game - what a bad experience you are. From the unfriendly inefficent staff in-store, to lack of good customer service, to undisclosed settlement fees. Just terrible.
