Unable to Close Account Despite No Balance – Unfair Interest Charges
On Saturday, 9 May, I contacted RCS to request a settlement balance, even though my account was not in arrears and in fact reflected a small credit in my favour. The consultant informed me that the account was up to date with no outstanding balance, and therefore there was no need to request a settlement. I also indicated that I wanted to close the account, but was told that their system was offline and they were unable to process the closure at that time. On 10 May, which is the date interest is typically app****, I expected that no interest would be charged as there was no outstanding balance on my account. However, to my surprise, I noticed that interest of R333 had been added. To avoid further complications, I settled this amount on 11 May and then contacted RCS again to proceed with closing the account. During this follow-up call, I was informed that I should have requested a settlement before making the payment. I explained that I had already attempted to do so on 9 May and was advised otherwise. The consultant then advised that since my account is not owing, I must first use the card again and then request a settlement after a week, or alternatively request settlement just before the next statement date on 10 June. I questioned this approach, as I had already received the 10 May statement and made payment in full, but the consultant insisted on this process. I am extremely dissatisfied with this experience. I do not understand why I am being charged interest when there was no outstanding balance, and why I am unable to close the account despite making every effort to do so. This situation is frustrating, as it appears to force me to continue incurring unnecessary charges.
