False Credit Score details sent to Trans Union due to Inability to Manage Account Credit
I opened up a Cape Union Mart Store card account in May of 2014 and made my first in-store down payment of R300.00 around June 2014. This payment reflected as a R30'000,00 down payment on my RCS statement in July 2014.
I never understood the statement as I had purchased items on the card but every month I received the statement it would read "Total Monthly Payment Due = R0,00? Initially I thought that they had automatically increased my credit limit and I had not reached a spend amount that would constitute a repayment?
I had last used the account in 2016 and at that time had accumulated a debt of approximately R3500.00 and still that statements read "Total Monthly Payment Due = R0,00".
I had queried the statement over the phone a few times but the first correspondence I have on record in my mail box is in April 2020. I queried the outstanding amount due as I wanted to close the account knowing that I had outstanding monies owed on the card when the *** rep**** and asked that I should provide a proof of payment for the R30'000.00 so that they can refund the amount to me. I then went on to explain that I had not made that payment and it must have been a mistake on their side? The e-mail trail went cold I followed up twice and then I got the same response asking proof of payment for the payment.
I then went on to send hours on the phone with RCS being bounced form department to department back to Cape Union Mart back to RCS explaining the same story to many of the consultants and after 17 months of phone calls and e-mails finally got my them to remove the R30'000,00.
RCS then claimed an amount R9'742.24 from me and RCS had handed the account over to the claims department and I was bombarded every day by claimless agents asking me when I would be making a payment. I then had to dispute the amount further as they could not hold me liable for the interest on the initial monies spent on the card of approximately R3'500,00. This required further phone calls with great frustration to resolve and on 11 September I received a letter stating that the amount due is R3'872.63. This was acceptable to me and in October I had I paid a minimum amount due to ensure that it reflected accurately on the statement and then in November I settled the account in full.
I had considered that matter with RCS as closed but when I app**** for credit at a bank in November my application was denied and the reason stated by the bank was that I had I had "Poor payment history with RCS". I phoned RCS and they said that there was a payment reversal on my account in July and August for amounts of R7085.00 and R7841.00 respectively and that this was the cause of a "Poor payment history". I now need to further correspond with RCS to clear this form my record. It has been and absolute horror resolving Cape Union Marts initial mistake of incorrectly receiving an amount of R30'000,00 on my account and owing to the way RCS has dealt with the issue has now affected my credit record and subsequently I have been denied of a bank loans.
