I was booked on the following flight: JNB - DOH Qatar Airways / QR1360 / Economy Airline *** Departure date: Wed, 20 Jul 2016, 20:45 Arrival date: Thu, 21 Jul 2016, 05:55 DOH - OTP Qatar Airways / QR221 / Economy Airline *** Departure date: Thu, 21 Jul 2016, 07:15 Arrival date: Thu, 21 Jul 2016, 12:10 Bucharest Baneasa to Johannesburg OTP - DOH Qatar Airways / QR220 / Economy Airline *** Departure date: Sun, 07 Aug 2016, 20:35 Arrival date: Mon, 08 Aug 2016, 01:05 DOH - JNB Qatar Airways / QR1363 / Economy Airline *** Departure date: Mon, 08 Aug 2016, 02:40 Arrival date: Mon, 08 Aug 2016, 10:00 On my way back from Bucharest to Johannesburg I has a backpack (with all my valuables - IPAD, IPOD and all chargers) with two rackets as my hand luggage. On my way from South Africa to Bucharest I had the same backpack and two rackets and this was accepted as hand luggage. On arrival from Bucharest to Doha on 7 August when I arrived at the security check I was told that the two rackets were not allowed as hand luggage. It needs to be taken as security items. I gave them the two rackets and they told me that the two rackets will be given to me back in South Africa. I did not have a problem with that. I then preceded to my boarding gate - with only my backpack as my hand luggage. When I checked in the lady told me that she sees I have security items. She told me that she will bring them to me. I responded that is ok. I was waiting to board when the lady arrived with the two rackets in her hand. She then told me - what about we put the rackets in your backpack. I thought she was giving the rackets back as they were already cleared at security. She then asked me for the backpack and said that she will put the backpack in the plane and when I leave the plane I will get the backpack. She did not ask me to take out my valuables and also she did not fill in any form and I did not sign any form. I was under the impression that I would receive my hand luggage when I leave the plane - that is exactly what she told me. When we arrived in Johannesburg and when I got to the front of the plane I asked the flight attendant for my backpack. To my surprise I was told that the backpack went with the normal luggage. I waited form my checked in luggage which appeared very quick. I waited another 45 minutes for my backpack and it still did not appear. I went to a staff member of Qatar and asked where would the backpack be delivered as it was not checked in and I thought it was hand luggage. He then told me it might be in the space behind gate 2. I went there but no bag arrived. I went back to the normal area and a guy came running with a trolley and I saw my backpack on the trolley. I immediately opened my backpack in front of both of them and all my valuables were missing. IPAD Mini with special display bought in the USA for 700 dollar, IPOD bought for R3000.00 in South Africa and all my chargers (IPAD, IPOD and my IPhone charger). I was not negligent with my valuables as this was my hand luggage which Qatar decided to take from me and give it back when I leave the plane. They did not tell me that they will treat that as gate luggage and then take my stuff. I am very upset. I fly often from the USA to South Africa and this is the very first time that me belongings were taken. I am fami**** with the rules for hand luggage. This my first experience with Qatar and not a very good experience. I would like to be refunded for my lost valuables.
