Damaged luggage and not offering to replace

Loved my flight from SA to Stockholm, however my luggage was damaged in the process (Hard shelled bag completely cracked right through WHILE WRAPPED). The best they could offer me was 22USD as I was not able to provide them with a original purchase receipt from when I first bought the bag.. I had to purchase a whole new bag which was not budgeted for, and they refused to re-imburse me. Pathetic if you ask me!!!
