Protea Metering

Our gated complex in Montana, north of Tshwane, Protea Metering has the monopoly over the water and the electricity services. It seems to be a strategy of Protea metering to increase our electricity bill in a transmitantly manner throughout the year, meaning that the average use of energy is not showing constant, suspiciously earning themselves millions of rand’s. For selected months, the energy are charged more than others, making it challenging to keep track of the actual usage and therefore the billing gets loaded in favour of the service provider profits other than. Every time we lodge a complaint the service provider substantially reduces the bill for that month only, the subsequently moths we get charged extra usage, beyond the average usage. This seems to be a tactic which the energy provider then gets reimbursed on the so called previous reduction. This phenomena had happened for years and still do to most of the Protea metering clients, I referring to online media and local resident groups, but we are handicapped. In addition to the ombudsman and NERSA which we have already contacted without satisfaction, are there any other possibilities the public can approach

Good day Rob

Kindly note that the information supp**** is unfortunately insufficient to determine which account on our system you are referring to.

That being said, we can however provide the following information:

Protea Metering does not have the monopoly in terms of service delivery - we were appointed by the HOA or BODY CORPORATE for providing the reading service.  Neither do we determine the tariffs for electricity and water, but the promulgated tariffs for each Council  with electricity tariffs that were approved by NERSA is app**** when processing invoices.

Also note that the residents of a household are the only ones that have control over the number of kwh electricity/kl of water is consumed.  The mere recording of readings does not enable the metering company to influence the consumption in any way.

Electricity sales allows for a very small margin of profit according to the promulgated tariffs, and on water NO PROFIT can be made since the promulgated tariff for purchasing and reselling is exactly the same.

Funds collected from reselling electricity & water is utilized to settle the bulk account from the Council to ensure the continued bulk supply from the Council.  The Council account must at all times be paid up to date, irrespective of non-payment from clients, electricity theft or whatever factors can cause non receipt of funds owed to us.  This responsibility certainly does not leave room for "millions" to be made - your assumption couldn't be further removed from the truth.

NERSA is the ultimate regulating body for selling/reselling of electricity.  Perhaps they could not establish any problem with your account?

Should you wish to get personal attention regarding your account, kindly forward an email providing your address or account number to our info email address and ask for it to be forwarded to our Debtors Manager.

Kind regards
