High Electricity Costs

I’m currently residing at Devland Gardens . Since I’ve move in I’ve been paying an estimate of R1000 to R1200 on electricity every month. This is an ridiculous amount for someone who is living in a low cost social housing development. I don’t even think that people living in houses or in town houses in the suburbs pay this amount. The only things that I utilize in my unit is the tv, stove and fridge. Winter is here and I’m even scared to use my heater. This is ****************!!!!!

Good day Brendon
Please note that you have a Credit Wallet account, which means each day as you consume electricity and water the amounts for electricity, cold water, hot water and sewer consumption is deducted from your available credit.  These funds are collected on behalf of the Body Corporate, who has to keep the Council account paid in full to ensure uninterrupted supply of services to the whole complex.
It is important for you to login and view your OAMI credit wallet on the website www.oami.co.za to monitor the exact usage of each type of utility. On your OAMI profile via the website you can see your readings, the total usage for the current month as well as the rand value charged. Furthermore, you can go into each different meter to view your exact kWh usage or litres consumed. Select the options “water consumption” or “electricity consumption”, here you will be able to see your daily readings/ usage and you will be able to see if you have a possible water leak.

What many people fail to mention when complaining about high ELECTRICITY is that their account also include other services.

It is important for consumers to monitor your consumption to enable you to apply energy- and water saving measures to limit consumption as far as possible.  For useful tips in this regard, please visit our web page and view the energy saving tips that can be found under the SERVICES icon.

Important to note is that the recording of readings does not at all have any influence on the registered consumption.  Only the residents of a household have control over how much electricity and water is consumed.
It is not the size of a house that determines the amount of electricity and water consumption - it is the consumption patterns of the residents of the household that is in control of this.  Tariffs are the same irrespective of the kind of accommodation.  It is very difficult to provide detailed information without the account number or address to enable us to verify the amounts that you have quoted in your complaint. Should you require a more detailed response where the consumption for your unit is evaluated, kindly forward an email to our info email address and we will communicate with you further in personal email.  Also please ensure to include your account number and/or address.

Kind regards
