JUMBO BAD SERVICE

Around May 2015 we bought a 'brand new' gas heater from Jumbo Cash and Cary, or so we thought that it was brand new. The heater was fine for 2015. When we operated the heater in 2016, gas started to smell too strongly from it. We supected that something may be wrong with the heater. We, however, operated the heater for the duration of the winter.

This year, we decided to take it in for check up. We did not go to Jumbo because the warranty would have expired. We took it to some gas dealer by the name of SYD's gas in Booysens. That is where we got a shock of of lives. SYD did not even touch the heater. One guy asked me to turn the heater around so that he could see the back panel. The heater had two *****s missing on the panel. The guy told us that the heater was opened before!!!! He advised us to take it back to where we bought it from.

The biggest question was that did we buy a brand new heater or a refurbished heater? We believe that the heater was refurbished. We suspect that a customer might have returned it it was fixed and re-packaged!!! Unfortunately. whoever repaired it forgot to replace all the *****s. We then took it up with Jumbo Cash and Carry.

We went to Jumbo on the 16th of June. Unfortunately, all buyers were absent because of the holiday. We were given a number and one buyer's name to call on Monday. On Monday, I called Noor, the buyer's name, and explained to him my problem. He laughed at me like I was crazy., but anyway, he promised to talk to the supplier and come back to me. He never did. I called again and asked to talk to the store manager. I was put through to another buyer by the name of Alan. He also promised to investigate and come back to me. He also did not come back.

I finally managed to speak to Martin, the sore manager. He told me he only sells new products and that the heater was out of warranty. I cannot wait for two years and raise the issue only now. I tried to explain to him that if SYD did not tell us that the heater was opened before, I would have let them fix it at my cost. He then said I must take it up with the supplier. Whose supplier is it. Mine, or Jumbo's? Also, this is not a warranty issue. My contention is that the initial contract of sale was null and void. Jumbo did not supply me with a new heater. I don't know how this happened.

I ended up with Jumbo's customer services department. There I spoke to a consultant by the surname of Peterson, his boss Anthea and her boss Chomis. I was not helped.

Like I said before, I believe that the initial contract was null and void. I want Jumbo to give me a new heater and take the one that I have. The biggest risk I am facing now is that I may have to buy a new heater. SYD gas told me that if the repairs go above R400.00, they will not even repair it. I would have to buy a new heater. Is this fair?
