Lack of water
Visited Pretoria zoo today, disappointed at the state if enclosures there were some with no water and some where the water was green and stagnant! Some of the animals look unhappy... bear, rhino hyena and I could go on. Big cat enclosure completely inadequate cheetah's have nowhere to run!!

Dear Hester. Please be assured that we take all matters relating to the zoo very seriously and aim to address issues as speedily as possible. Regarding the water; all the animals in the zoo have sufficient drinking water and easy access to this water. Most often the water areas are receded into the enclosure, such as with the tigers, and fresh drinking water is also made available to them in their night rooms should they wish to find it there. Many of our water bodies are managed on a natural environmental system and this will result in the greenish look of the water. This is mere algal growth and the water is in fact clean to drink. Many fish also reside in these water bodies and feed on the plant material. Cheetah do not run for leisure - they run to hunt. As their food is given to them there is no need for them to hunt for it. Environmental enrichment exercises are also incorporated into their activities to simulate the running by putting their food on a pulley system that is then pulled along the enclosure to simulate their hunting techniques. This has proved to be very successful for their health and well being.
