Ponta do Oura & Afristay issues with prepaid for holiday in Mozambique and bad service
On 11Dec2019 we had paid Afristay in full (R4200.00) for our holiday at Ponta Beach Camps Accommodation. Upon our arrival at Ponta Beach Camp on 26 December 2019, we were shocked to see that we are not being given the accommodation that we had paid. (We paid for beach front tents where we would share communal kitchen and ablutions). These tents had already been given to other holiday makers and non would be available during the period we had paid for. Being a public holiday in South Africa we could not reach Afristay per telephone. ***Note that all telephone calls we need to make were at our expense. We refused to sleep in the tents at the back of the restaurant as this was not what we had paid for and they were not very clean either. We were able to secure alternative accommodation for the evening in one of the beachfront tents that were available that evening. This fee of R1700.00 was deducted from the money we had already paid for our booking through Afristay. The next morning we were back at the office trying to sort out this issue. I contacted Felix at Afristay who confirmed that the tents wanting to be given us by Ponta Beach Camp was not what we had paid for. Lawrence the owner was sitting on a chair at the reception area and asked what was wrong. We gave him the full story. The only alternative he had come up with was to have the lady at reception give us another tent with ensuite as this was all they had available. However, we had to pay an additional R8500,00 on top of our balance of R2500 left from the original paid for booking. Basically our prebooked and paid for holiday cost us an actual amount of R12.700,00 instead of R4200.00. We spoke to Afristay once again per telephone concerning this. Both parties i.e. Afristay and Ponta Beach Camp never offered us any assistance regarding the additional money we had to pay for accommodation or give us a discount for the mistake made on there parts. Neither did we get an apology from the owner himself for the trouble we were having. If we had not driven all those hours from Cape Town to Mozambique we would have gotten back in our car and gone home. However, this was not possible at all. A few of our neighbours at the camp were very disgusted at what had happened to us and had advised that this was not the first time they had met persons that were on holiday having some sort of issue with Ponta Beach Camp. We decided to visit Mozambique upon an invitation by another traveller to this beautiful country who could not stop boasting of this magnificent country and people. What saddens me is that we had budgeted on a set amount for our holiday. The additional funds having to be paid for accommodation prevented us from travelling further inland to visit different parts of the country. What happened if we had only a set amount of money on us to pay for food and petrol taking into consideration that our holiday had already been paid for? Or what if we were students with only a set budget? This is not acceptable at all. Overall though between Ponta do Oura and Ponta Malongane we managed to have a wonderful holiday. We met amazing people and enjoyed the hospitality shown us at different places by the natives of this country. The bottom line of my complaint is that: If you are using a travel agent be very, very sure that you are paying for the correct accommodation as advertised and that if there are any financial errors made costing you the traveller a few rands more, then either the travel agent or or the owner of the holiday destination you are travelling to need to take responsibility for their mistake, unlike what we had experienced. We will never be back to Ponta Do Oura Beach Camp again but we will definitely visit Mozambique again for a holiday.
