POPI

Platinum Life sent me a message telling me that "my friend" John Bastiaan allowed them to send him a promotional gift. They want to phone me as well. 20/06/2022 at 11:08 am.

I did not respond and I did not "tick" somewhere in confirmation that I authorise any promotional contact. The caller was not automated or pre-recorded. The text message did not provide me with an opt-out option.

And still they phone be and again **** about the fact that I supposedly have a friend John Bastiaan. So if I do, have a friend John Bastiaan for argument's sake - where did you get that privileged information? And who gave you the authorisation to use that personal information in an attempt to promote business with me?

The caller for platinum life refused to give me their information officer's details - and in the end, admitted he did not know who their information officer is and he can not provide the details to me. One of the requirements of POPI is that processors of personal information obtain POPI act training - yet this guy clearly did not know anything about his information officer - he just read from a piece of paper claiming that "we are POPI compliant".

I do NOT want promotional calls, text messages or anything. PLEASE TAKE ME OFF YOUR legal or *******ly obtained data basis. I did not give any permission to contact me - If I somewhere somehow had to give permission to one of your affiliates or contacts or neighbour - I summarily revoke any authorisation to contact me EVER!

Good Day Mr Skeen  I have listened to the call that we made to you and would kindly like to respond as follows:  We received your contact detail, in good faith, by way of a referral. POPIA does allow for us to make contact, by telephone, to persons referred to us. POPIA does, however, restrict unsolicited contact by electronic means, such as SMS, to only one occurrence.  You are quite correct with regards to our consultant who did not know the name of our Information Officer. We view our consultant’s inability to name our Information Officer very seriously, particularly as companywide training is provided annually. I have escalated the matter to the consultant’s manager responsible and we will be monitoring the relevant Department closely to ensure that this does not happen again.  Please be assured that we have removed your personal information from our database as you have requested.  Kind regards  Simoné Venter

Good afternoon, Ms Venter,

Thank you for your replies, it is highly appreciated.
With respect, I dispute the referral claim. I am not aware of any “referrals” as my contacts are very well aware of my approach towards personal information sharing especially to businesses and companies that advertise via phone calls, text messages and WhatsApp's.

I do however appreciate that my personal information have been removed from the system. Furthermore, I look forward to not having any contact from platinum life or affiliates without me requesting contact initially.

Thank you and have a lovely evening.
