Platinum Life

I would like to make people aware of Platinum life and the premiums charged over a period of many years. My mom is a pensioner, 65 years of age. She joined Platinum life 9 years ago when she was still working permanently. My dad became a paraplegic 4 years ago, lost his leg and my mom was forced to take early retirement to look after my dad at home. She now only receives a Sassa grant of R1800 monthly and my dad a small pension.

She contacted Platinum Life to inform them that she cannot afford a monthly premium of R1600 a month. This is almost her whole Sassa amount. She has been forced to cancel this policy due to financial difficulty and her situation. She has lost all 9 years paid premiums to Platinum life. Her payout from Platinum Life is only in 2033 which is ridiculous as she could not still be alive by then, as she is already 65 years of age.

Platinum Life has not even offered to pay her back at least 50% of her premiums paid, they are willing to just take all her money which she has paid over the years. I find this a disgrace as Insurance providers can take money from pensioners and not come to an agreement when they say they cannot afford the premiums anymore.

My mom did not know that she would find herself in this situation when she commenced with Platinum Life. People are to be aware of the escalation in premiums and the money they can loose should their life circumstances change drastically.

Dear Luan,

I have received your review and would like to provide some feedback regarding this matter

We wish to confirm that the policy does not acquire any surrender, loan, paid-up or cash value during its term.  Please refer to the General terms and conditions in the policy contract which states that “The policy does not:  accrue a surrender value.”  All our policies have a set term of at least 20 years and this is always discussed and confirmed in the policy documents and all sales calls.

We try to assist any policy holder as much as possible with adjusting the benefits and cover on their policy to ensure that it suits them best. A consultant did contact your mother and tried to assist on the 23rd of September to ensure that she can make an informed decision about her policy, knowing all the options available to her. The policy was cancelled thereafter as requested.

Keep in mind that this policy is a whole life policy.  This means that in order to enjoy cover in a month, a premium must be paid on time.  Each monthly premium is paid individually and separately for the specific risk that Platinum Life carries for that month.  There is no cumulative effect of premiums paid over the duration of a policy.  Previous premiums have no bearing on the cover available for a current month and do not accumulate a value.

I will arrange a call back to be done with her again to go through options available. Unfortunately, we can't amend or change the money back date or the terms and conditions of the policy

Kind Regards
