Urgent Complaint Regarding Planet Fitness Sanlam Reality Membership Discrepancy

Hi there,

I am writing to raise a formal complaint against Planet Fitness regarding their handling of my two-year Sanlam Reality membership plan.

When I signed up for the two-year membership, I paid R125 to Sanlam and R395 to Planet Fitness monthly. This was an affordable arrangement, and I had no issues meeting my financial obligations. However, at the end of the two-year period, I was informed that the Sanlam Reality special had ended, and I would now have to pay the full membership fee of R899. Unable to afford this amount, my contract was cancelled.

To my shock, I have now discovered that the Sanlam Reality special is still active. I am deeply disappointed that Planet Fitness did not continue my membership under the same arrangement but instead attempted to charge me the full membership fee, leading to the cancellation of my contract.

Additionally, I was informed at the time of cancellation that I was in arrears of R1,400. However, I have now received a call stating that I owe R4,000 and that my account has been handed over for ITC listing. This is unacceptable. My contract was cancelled in November 2024, and the only legitimate arrears amount should be for the month of R899, which I could not afford. The claim of R4,000 in arrears appears to be an unjustifiable and exaggerated charge.

I consider this to be an act of unfair and misleading business practice. If the Sanlam Reality special is still running, Planet Fitness should not have forced me onto a higher payment plan or cancelled my membership. Furthermore, the inflated arrears amount seems to be an attempt at ******ion.

I am requesting: 1. A detailed and transparent breakdown of how the alleged R4,000 was calculated. 2. Immediate rectification of my account to reflect the legitimate outstanding amount, which is R899 for the unpaid month. 3. Removal of my account from ITC listing, as this is a direct result of Planet Fitness’s mismanagement and misinformation.

If these issues are not resolved promptly, I will escalate the matter to the Consumer Protection Commission.

Hi Planet Fitness Team,
Thanks for getting back to me and explaining the Sanlam Reality benefit requirements. I understand now that the discount depends on attending the gym at least 13 times, and that my discount dropped to 20% from September due to low usage.
However, I feel that this entire situation could have been handled much better:

When this issue arose, your consultants weren’t helpful or supportive. Instead of taking the time to explain the situation and my options, I was dismissed, leaving me confused and frustrated.

hope you can understand my frustration and disappointment in how this was handled. Better communication and support would have gone a long way to avoid this mess. I look forward to your response and hope we can resolve this quickly.

For two years, I consistently attended the gym more than 13 times every month, yet for one month of low attendance, my discount was reduced. This feels incredibly unfair and like a punishment for what was otherwise consistent attendance. Quite disheartened actually

I would also like the recording from the agent who called regarding debt collection and advised me that I was in arrears of R1,400. During that call, I informed her that I could not afford the charges and requested that my subscription be cancelled. Despite this, I have since been called and told that I am still being billed for something I no longer have access to.
