Unwillingness to assist in cancelation after disability

My son has a membership with Planet fitness and was in a motorbike accident where he lost his leg. They refuse to cancel his membership and demands R7500 in order to cancel this membership. Surely this is exceptional circumstances as he is temporary disabled and unable to work or use the Gym facility.
