Unwilling to Cancel - Member Unemployed

My daughter has recently become unemployed and in turn cannot afford to pay her monthly amount for Planet Fitness. She approached the Centurion Planet fitness to enquire as to what the process was to cancel, due to the financial constraints. The branch then in turn called the head office and allowed my daughter to speak to the consultant. Basically the consultant told my daughter that she cannot cancel, and that she is liable for the monthly amount of R800. Now if I read the terms and conditions, it says that the contract may be cancelled with a calendar month's notice, or am I missing something? How can Planet Fitness force a person with ZERO income to continue paying for the gym contract? It is not her fault she was retrenched? I would like to have answers please, and mostly I would like this contract cancelled
