Planet Fitness – Trapped in a Contract with No Access

I am extremely disappointed with Planet Fitness and their cancellation policy.

I am relocating back to Nelspruit at the end of February, where there is no Planet Fitness branch. Despite this, I am being charged a cancellation fee of close to R4,000. My membership anniversary is only in June, which means I am expected to continue paying for several months for a service I physically cannot access.

This feels incredibly unfair and unreasonable. Had I known how rigid and consumer-unfriendly this contract is, I would never have signed up in the first place. I genuinely wish someone had warned me.

There is no flexibility, no empathy, and no consideration for real-life circumstances like relocation. Being locked into payments for a gym that does not exist in my new city is unacceptable.

If you’re considering joining Planet Fitness — abort mission. Read every clause very carefully, because getting out of this contract will cost you dearly.

I will definitely not recommend Planet Fitness to anyone.

I was never presented with this option or have missed it somehow. Please could you proceed with below oprion

* Serving a two-month notice period at the applicable monthly rate.

Just to confirm, will this be February and March or March and April?

I contacted your team to amend my cancellation from “end of term” to the required two-month notice period. I explicitly requested that the notice period be app**** to February and March, as this is when I notified Planet Fitness of my intention to cancel.

However, I was advised that my cancellation can only be processed for March and April, on the basis that notice periods must apply to “full months.” This interpretation is both unreasonable and prejudicial, as it effectively extends my financial obligation beyond the period during which I notified you of my cancellation.

This approach gives the impression that Planet Fitness structures its contracts primarily to serve its own interests rather than those of its clients. I have acted in good faith, provided notice timeously, and am now being unfairly penalised through an arbitrary interpretation of the notice requirement.

I respectfully request that this matter be reviewed and that my cancellation be backdated to February, with the two-month notice period correctly app**** to February and March. Continuing to charge me for a period in which I will not have access to your facilities is both unreasonable and financially irresponsible.

I trust that this matter will be resolved fairly and without further escalation.
