Planet Fitness threatening leagl action because my contract expired
February 2018 my cousin and I were looking at exercise options for us to do together. We stumbled into a Planet Fitness branch to ask how much, and a consultant helped us. He gave us a special student offer of having the first month free of charge, the next three months R199, and thereafter R399 per month, and our contract would expire after 12 months (so February 2019). We wanted to think about it and get back to him, but he INSISTED that if we leave we will lose the special offer, and will then have to pay R699 per month. Feeling pressured and being baited (two young students who have never really signed contracts before), we fell for it. The actual experience of going to the gym was okay. The only problem was the small size of the Moreleta Park branch, and how some equipment seems to just always be occupied. June 2018, suddenly double our monthly amount (R399, so now R799) gets taken off our accounts. We go to enquire about this, and get told there's an annual levy. We weren't told about this prior to the day, so having basically everything taken out of my account was not pleasant. January 2019, and I decide I don't want to continue being a member of the gym because I won't be able to afford it with the price increase, so I try to stop the membership. I admit I was a bit late on my part, because I waited until the first/second week of February 2019 to do so. I try to phone the number provided (because you can't cancel your membership in person), to no avail. I go into the Moreleta Park branch and talk to them, and they manage to phone from there, on a very shoddy and hard-to-hear connection might I add. I fully accept having to pay an extra amount because I didn't let them know 30 days in advance, but then I get told I have to pay and additional R399 because I'm not renewing my membership? At this point I'm tired so I just agree. The debit order goes off from my account for March 2019 (I figure this should be enough to calm them down), so I go to the bank and stop the debit order. I got an instant reveral on the amount they tried to claim for April 2019. To my surprise, in May 2019 they changed the reference number of the debit order and pushed it through, and took about R455,70 from my account. Then a few days later they took about R420.70 from my account. I went into the bank to try and stop it, but because the debit order number and amount keeps getting changed, there's nothing they can do, and just reversed the amounts. But then I received an SMS from Planet Fitness stating "Dear Member, we have noticed that your account is still in arrears. To avoid legal actionkindly contact Planet Fitness" Do you think it's possible to actually get through to them if you call? I'm tired. Please, if you're considering opening an account with PF, DONT! You'll only have endless troubles.
